How to Have a Calm Christmas (Even If Everyone Around You Is Losing It)

Christmas is supposed to feel magical…

So why does your nervous system feel like it’s prepping for war?

For some, the C-word brings joy and jubilation.
For others, it’s a flashing warning light, sparking pre-emptive panic weeks before the festive season even begins.

Wherever you land on the “holiday hype” scale, I want to show you how to create a Christmas that feels peaceful, easeful, and actually enjoyable, without pushing yourself to the edge in the process.

Because here’s the reality:
A calm Christmas isn’t a fluke.
It’s something you choose.
And you’re allowed to choose it and have it your way.

Why Christmas Feels So Damn Stressful

There are a few key reasons so many of us spiral into stress or feeling anxious and overwhelmed this time of year:

  • Trying to do Christmas “right” for everyone else
  • Overcommitting your calendar
  • Abandoning your values, desires, and boundaries
  • Letting your well-being fall off a cliff in the name of “festive spirit”

Plus, with the added pressure of social media, including curated trees, aesthetic table spreads, “look how magical this is!” content, it’s no wonder we feel like we’re failing if our reality looks different.

Your Festive Season, Your Rules

Here’s the thing:
The perfect Christmas is the one you define…not your mum, your neighbour, your followers, or that one influencer whose kid is wearing organic linen pyjamas while baking gluten-free snowman biscuits.

And yet…
We people-please.
We overspend.
We say yes to things we don’t want to do.
We go, go, go until our nervous system is screaming “CHILL OUT!” and we drown it with sugar, caffeine, adrenaline and maybe one too many proseccos.

All completely natural.
Just not helpful.

The Cultural Conditioning You Didn’t Ask For

You’re biologically wired to want to belong.
Thousands of years ago, being “the odd one out” meant actual danger, so we learned to blend, conform, please, and perform.

Now? Your tribe isn’t your village. It’s the internet.
And it’s constantly telling you how to be, act, think, and celebrate.

So at Christmas, those messages get even louder and they hit your nervous system hard.

So What Do You Do Instead?

You get clear.
You pause.
You ask yourself what you actually want.

Your Calm Christmas Clarity Exercise

Grab a pen and paper and answer these prompts:

➡️ What does YOUR calm, joyful Christmas look and feel like?
Write freely. Describe the energy, the pace, the people, the food, the vibe.

➡️ What do you genuinely WANT to do this year?
Who do you want to spend time with? What kind of giving or socialising feels good?

➡️ What are you NOT doing this year?
Say it. Honour it. What are you ready to release? What will you say no to?

➡️ How will you protect your boundaries and communicate them?
Especially important if you’ve got family or friends who like to override your “no.”

➡️ How and when will you make time for YOU?
Because if you’re feeling burnt out, no one’s having a good time, especially not you.

What My Christmas Looks Like (and Why That Matters)

Before becoming a parent, I was allll about the parties, festive networking, and full calendars.
Now? Not so much.

These days, I crave space.
Quiet family time. Early bedtimes.
One or two thoughtful gifts. No tech overload.
Stillness, simplicity, and soft joy.

I gift experiences instead of “stuff.”
I keep phones away so my child grows up knowing human connection matters more than curated content.
I say no to obligations that don’t align, and yes to what lights us up.

It feels beautiful. Aligned. And just right for me.

And I want that for you, too.

The Hardest Part? Follow-Through

Once you’re clear on your version of calm, the hardest bit is sticking to it.

Especially when people don’t respect your boundaries.
(And let’s be honest my friend — some won’t.)

So here’s your invitation:

✅ Communicate clearly and kindly
✅ Set expectations in advance
✅ Hold the line with love
✅ And if someone’s not okay with it? That’s their work to do, not yours

Say it with me now:

It’s not my job to make everyone else’s Christmas magical.
It’s my job to honour myself.

Let’s Make This the Year You Actually Enjoy It

So with a few weeks to go, take a moment.
Grab your cuppa, your journal, your wine, your smoothie — whatever suits your vibe —
and map out your calmest, clearest, most beautiful Christmas yet.

Not the one that looks best online.
The one that feels best in your body.

Because you deserve that.
And your nervous system? It’ll thank you.
